Theseus
An exploration of bamboo as a material.
Here is a collection of renders and actual craftsmanship that went behind making this.
Duration: 2 weeks | Classroom project
Some digital renders of the lamp. The texture was picked from the actual prototype I built
This lamp was an exercise in working with bamboo. I started out with bamboo cuttings lying around the workshop. The first version of the lamp looked like a poor attempt between a light and a bird.
Somehow I felt the need to fix it. So, I started thinking "hmm, I'll just replace the base, maybe that will fix it". And I wanted articulation.
I ended up making an entirely new lamp, with a rough sketch to start with. Hence the name, Theseus, after the mythological ship that had all its parts replaced. Swipe through the gallery below for images
Here is how the articulation works
The new design felt too over-the-top. So after a couple of rounds of simplifying (incidentally the base again), I arrived at the latest iteration. Some images of the actual lamp are below.
